What do I need to consider running a festival?

What is your festivals Identity?

This sounds obvious we know, but key to all festivals is who it attracts and why. From the small and character smaller festivals through to the giants we all know, its as much how they make people feel as the music that keeps them wanting more.

Although you will be looking to be unique, consider a handful of festivals that you love yourself. What things do you love about those? Could they be transferred to your own vision? What things do you dislike about those festivals and want to stay away from?

What’s your budget?

First thing that comes to mind. Fyre festival. If you have not watched the Netflix documentary, give it ago. Although it is an extreme of poor planning, it is a good lesson as to how badly things can unfold for you (and your guests) if you don’t plan every details of your festival and its budget.

Many festivals have started off with single day events to start with a smaller budget and learn on the job. Although thus may not tie in with your ambitions, its worth considering if your budget is overwhelmed early on.

Timeline for your festival

If the planning has not started yet, your festival needs to be 12 months away. This is key to allow you to source insurance, sites, and teams. Crucially, bands are typically booked in through a management company for the duration of the year.

Your first year’s success will hang largely on the ability to market your event to an audience wanting to attend.
